World's First Virtual Store Opens in Korea

A major South Korean retailer has opened what it appears to be the world's first virtual store geared to smartphone users, with shoppers scanning barcodes of products displayed in a Seoul subway station. Homeplus, the nation’s second largest discount chain, is offering 500 items including food, electronics, office supplies and toiletries at its "store" at Seolleung station in the south of the city of 10 million.
Seven pillars and six platform screen doors have been plastered with images of life-size store shelves filled with goods -- such as milk, apples, a bag of rice or school backpacks -- which each carry a small barcode. Shoppers download a related application on their smartphone and make purchases by taking photos of the barcodes.

"You place an order when you go to work in the morning and can see the items delivered at home when you come home at night," said a spokeswoman for Homeplus.
In fact, consumers don’t have to be anywhere near the virtual store. For example, if you want to order replacements of a bottle of water that you have in your hand, you don’t have to stop by the subway station. You simply scan the bottle’s barcode with the Homeplus app. The products are delivered later to home or office.
Currently, only Android smartphone users will be able to use the service that launched last week. Not that Homeplus hasn’t made an app iPhone, it’s just Steve Jobs and Co. hasn’t approved it yet.

In 1956, IBM launched the RAMAC 305 - the first computer with a hard disk drive (HDD). This weighed over a ton and consisted of fifty 24" discs, stacked together in a wardrobe-sized machine. Two independent access arms moved up and down to select a disk, and in and out to select a recording track, all under servo control. The total storage capacity of the RAMAC 305 was 5 million 7-bit characters, or about 4.4 MB.

 1962 saw the release of the IBM 1311 - the first storage unit with removable disks. Each "disk pack" held around two million characters of information. Users were able to easily switch files for different applications.

Transistor technology - which replaced vacuum tubes - began to substantially reduce the size and cost of computer hardware.

The IBM 3330 was introduced in 1970, with removable disk packs that could hold 100 MB. The 1973 model featured disk packs that held 200 MB (pictured here). Access time was 30 ms and data could be transferred at 800 kB/s.

Floppy disks arrived in 1971, revolutionising data storage. Although smaller in capacity, they were extremely lightweight and portable. The earliest versions measured 8 inches in diameter. These were followed by 5¼-inch disks in the late 1970s and 3½-inch disks in the mid-1980s.

Data storage continued to make exponential progress into the 1990s and beyond. Floppy disks were replaced by CD-ROMs, which in turn were replaced by DVD-ROMs, which in turn began to be superseded by the Blu-Ray format. Home PCs with 100 GB hard drives were common by 2005 and 1 terabyte (TB) hard drives were common by 2010.

Secure digital (SD) cards arrived in the early 2000s. These provided storage in a thumbnail-sized form factor, enabling them to be used with digital cameras, phones, MP3 players and other handheld devices.

Micro-SD cards (pictured below) have shrunk this format to an even smaller size. As of 2010, it is possible to store 32 GB of data on a device measuring 11 x 15 mm, weighing 0.5 grams and costing under $100.

To put this in context: this is over 3 million times lighter and over 10,000 times cheaper than an equivalent device of 30 years ago.

So, what does the future hold?
The memory capacity of the human brain has been estimated at between one and ten terabytes, with a most likely value of 3 terabytes.* Consumer hard drives are already available at this size.*

128 GB micro-SD cards are being planned for 2011* and there is even a 2 TB specification in the pipeline.*

Well before the end of this decade, it is likely that micro-SD cards (such as that pictured above) will exceed the storage capacity of the human brain.

By 2030, a micro-SD card (or equivalent device) will have the storage capacity of 20,000 human brains.

By 2043, a micro-SD card (or equivalent device) will have a storage capacity of more than 500 billion gigabytes - equal to the entire contents of the Internet in 2009.*

By 2050 - if trends continue - a device the size of a micro-SD card will have storage equivalent to three times the brain capacity of the entire human race.

The only female firefighter in Negeri Sembilan

I was browsing something and accidently discovered an interesting article.
The title caught my attention and the key word here is "The only". NS boleh!

After she joined the fire service, she went for a 4½ month training course in Kuala Kubu Baru. She became a formal firefighter in 1990 and has been serving at the Rahang Fire Station in Seremban since then.

Now the operation commander at Rahang Fire Station, Peng told Sin Chew Daily that curiosity had prompted her to join the fire service when she was reading a recruitment notice on the newspaper.
She was among one of the first batch of female firefighters in Malaysia, and the only Chinese female trainer. Her parents have persuaded her to give up this career as they were worried that she would get too tired working so hard.
Nevertheless she insisted to carry on with the training as she thought it was a truly challenging job.
Peng said she had the look of a man during the training as she had to keep her hair short and her skin was darkened due to constant exposure under the sun.
Prefers to work outdoors
Peng was transferred to the administrative department in the course of her service with the fire department; however she said she preferred to work outside the office than sitting comfortably in the air-conditioned office.
She is always busy cleaning up the office whenever she is free, or receives phone calls at the operation room. She would take immediate action the moment she receives any report of fire.
Peng was very eager to get to know other female firefighters when she first joined the fire service, but was constantly disappointed because there weren't any new female recruits joining her team.
She admitted that working as a firefighter was indeed an extremely challenging and dangerous job. However, as the firefighters have all gone through proper training, they know how to respond to certain circumstances.

Peng recalled that she had had an unforgettable wedding with her husband, a businessman in Seremban, when the couple tied the knot at the fire station in 1996. Her colleagues even arranged for the media to interview them.
A mother of three today, Peng feels apologetic to her family as she could hardly meet them most of the time. Fortunately her family understand the nature of her work and their relationship remains as good as ever.
She claimed that she could work until the day she is retired so long as her passion for this job is still alive, despite the fact that her age is fast catching up.
She admitted that she was nervous when she first performed her duty at the scene of a minor road accident.
She said she would feel utterly depressed seeing the fire victims lose their homes, properties and even lives.

Seremban

Iron bridge is falling down, falling down, my sweet Seremban. I think this is the last British legacy in Seremban and it's gone forever. This steel bridge was built by the British (in 1920s?). It was located near KGV high school and railway station.

I recalled two bridges in my early life. My dad used to cycle me ( I sat on a rattan chair at the back) to kindergarten and we passed under this steel bridge. Second bridge was made of wood which crosses a river (near my home). Being small (in standard 1 or 2), it was a nightmare whenever I crossed it on foot with my mom. Luckily the wooden bridge was swept away during flood.



The steel bridge was taken down to make way for Seremban middle ring road. What a shame.

Floppy Disc

Once upon a time... these are cutting edge technology. This one is 8.5 inch, not the biggest one. I remembered a much bigger one back in year 1990 when I was working in Motorola Seremban but I could not remember its dimension. It was really really bulky and heavy. You need 4 persons to carry the floppy drive! Now, can you imagine the size of the computer if the floppy drive is this big? Luckily there are 5.25 inch floppy drives and it was popular until SONY (if I'm not mistaken) design 3.5 inch (in full plastic casing) which was a hit.
